Toasties

Opened in late September 2014, Toasties is a young establishment opened to cater to the Muslim community in Singapore with a halal alternative to Subway®. Their concept is pretty similar to that of Subway® but their menu consists of more than just sandwiches. They also serve pizza and wraps among a few others. Their bread is baked in store daily to ensure quality and freshness.

Smoked Chicken Breast ($5.90)

Italian Trio ($6.90)

Turkey Ham ($5.90)

The price of a regular 6" sub ranges from $4.90 to $6.90 and an additional $3.50 for a 12" footlong. The types of bread available are Crunchy, Honey Oats, Premium and Oregano Parmesan

We tried the Smoked Chicken Breast ($5.90) and Italian Trio ($6.90) with the Crunchy and Turkey Ham ($5.90) with the Oregano Parmesan. All came with quite a generous amount of ingredients and tasted pretty good but our favourite among the three would probably have to be the Italian Trio, which consists of beef salami, pepperoni and bacon.

We have tried Subway® in Malaysia and after trying Toasties, we can safely say that the subs served at both are relatively comparable except that Subway® is much more generous with their meat serving.

For an additional $2.50 (+$1.00 to upsize), you can complete your meal with a choice of either cheesy nachos or cheesy sausage and a cup of soft drink (+$1.00 refill).

Vintage Delicafe

Located along Bussorah Street sits Vintage Delicafe, a quaint, cosy and homely halal eatery serving Western and Italian cuisine. We have heard so much rave about it we had to check it out for ourselves.

Despite being a double storey cafe, it is a pretty small space with limited seating (both indoor and outdoor seating available). We had to wait quite some time before getting assigned a table but it was understandable since it was a Friday night.

For drinks, we highly recommend getting a jug ($5), which can be shared among 3 to 4 pax, instead of individual glasses ($2) to save on cost.

Calamari Rings ($8.00)

For our starter, we got calamari rings. Only two words to describe it; crispy and delicious. Lets be honest, you can never go wrong with calamari rings. We'd rate this a satisfying 4/5.

Beef Steak ($25.90)

A generous portion was served however, the meat was a little too tough for our liking and was a little dry but still palatable. We'd prefer it cooked to medium or medium rare for a juicier and more tender steak. It's only redeeming factor is the creamy mashed potatoes. We'd rate this a 3/5.

Grilled Lamb ($23.90)

As compared to the beef steak, the grilled lamb was much more satisfying. Having been cooked to medium, the meat was tender. We really enjoyed this dish and would give it a 4/5.

Seafood Aglio Olio ($15.90)

Apart from the choice of pasta, we also had a choice of the desired level of spiciness. We went for level 2. It definitely triggers the taste buds but was still pretty mild in our opinion. It would be great if they could introduce another level up for those who crave that extra kick. Apart from the muscles, everything else was fresh. We'd rate this dish a 3.5/5.

Grilled Dory ($14.90)
This dish left us sitting on the fence. The fillet was well marinated and flavourful but it was a shame because it wasn't cooked evenly. Also, the consistency of the cream of mushroom herb sauce was pretty thick and did get a little over-cloying after awhile. The creamy mashed potato served along side the dish was a winner. We'd rate this dish a 3/5.

The food here is not bad but it isn't great but if you're looking for a convenient eatery serving affordable dishes with pretty generous portions you might want to give Vintage Delicafe a shot. The staff here are very friendly and welcoming but we were let down by their lack of efficiency. We waited for quite some time before getting our orders taken and had to wait even longer for our food to be served. The ambiance was substandard. The lighting was too dim and it was a little too noisy.

ButterScotch Café

Conveniently located only a stone's throw away from Bukit Merah Bus Interchange lies a small yet cosy Halal eatery, ButterScotch Café. Only six months into its opening, business seems to be going relatively well attracting especially the Muslim community. The huge variety of sumptuous and aesthetically appealing home made desserts and speciality coffee served here never fail to leave diners wanting more.

Truffle Fries ($9)

We have been searching high and low for Halal truffle fries and when we saw it in the menu, we knew we had to get it. Every strand of shoestring fries were fried to the perfect shade of golden brown and coated evenly with truffle oil and parmesan cheese shavings. Truffle oil imparts the earthy flavour and aroma of truffles to the fries, both of which were discernible but not overpowering. There was also a subtle smoky after-taste from the truffle oil. Portion wise, even for a group of four it would suffice. Truffle fries will either appeal to your taste buds or not, there is no in between. We were disappointed with neither its quality nor quantity. We loved it and would rate it a 4.5/5

Buffalo Wings ($9)

If you've had the sweet treats and you're in need of something leaning more towards the savoury side to rid your mouth of the sweetness still lingering around or if you're simply craving for something with a kick that is bound to excite your taste buds, we strongly urge that you give these buffalo wings a shot. Despite being generously showered with the sauce, the wings still managed to retain its crisp and texture. The sauce was thick and piquant with a tinge of sweetness. We were very pleased with this dish and would rate it a 4.5/5. Definitely a a must-try for the spicy-lovers.

 Chilli Crab Cake Burger ($14)

We were particularly anticipating this dish because it was Butterscotch's very own rendition of Singapore's signature chilli crab, a favourite of ours, in the form of a burger. Unfortunately, this dish was a let down. The patty was said to be made with real crab meat but didn't quite taste like it. It tasted quite fishy and was a little dry. The sauce was decent but lacked spiciness and didn't quite taste like chilli crab sauce. The only redeeming factor was perhaps the potato wedges served alongside the burger. They had a nice crisp, were well seasoned and very flavourful. We especially loved how soft the potatoes were it's almost like fried mashed potatoes. It's safe to say that this is by far the best potato wedges we've had. We'd rate this dish a 3/5

 Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict ($16)

The brioche were toasted to perfection and wasn't soggy at all despite the generous amount of Hollandaise sauce over it. The sauce was rich and buttery, with a mild tang and complemented the saltiness of the salmon very well. The sauce is milder than the one at Penny University which is great for those who prefer it that way. The only downsides were that the yolks weren't runny enough and it gets a little over-cloying after awhile. Apart from that, we felt that it was pretty decent and would rate this a 3.5/5

 Butterscotch Soufflé ($14)

** The soufflé was high and mighty when served but gradually collapsed after some time

The butterscotch soufflé is one of their specialities here so we were quite excited about it. A soufflé is a lightly baked cake made with egg yolks and beaten egg whites combined with various other ingredients and should appear puffed up and fluffy

The soufflé was previously served with their signature butterscotch ice cream and chocolate sauce but we were informed that they've replaced it with vanilla ice cream due to their incapability of coping with the overwhelming demand. The soufflé by itself was already very flavourful, we felt that additional accompaniments weren't necessary. It tasted a little bit like roasted marshmallows at first bite. We like how it just melts in the mouth and how the taste of eggs wasn't overpowering. The lightness of the vanilla ice cream was a great accompaniment to the soufflé because it helped to subdue the richness of the soufflé. The portion served was quite generous and could definitely be shared among 2-3 people. The soufflé was a well executed and delightful dish. We'd rate this a 4.5/5

Ice cream, cakes and other sweet treats are also available.

Overall, the the spread was pretty sumptuous, the staff were friendly and the service rendered was really efficient. The place had a great ambience and gave off a nice vibe. It is however a relatively diminutive cafe with only six tables so it wouldn't be ideal to go in huge groups. Also, they do not do reservations due to limited seatings so do try to avoid the peak hours. Free wifi is available.

Wafflemeister, Suria KLCC

If you're in Kuala Lumpur and you're waffling over where to wander for darn good freshly made waffles that is guaranteed to satisfy your taste buds then we definitely urge you to try Wafflemeister.

Located on the third floor of the famous Suria KLCC Mall located underneath the Petronas Towers is the first South East Asian branch of the UK-based waffle chain, Wafflemeister. They've only been opened for less than a year but business seems to be going well which is no surprise because their flagship product, the handmade waffles, they serve are top notch. The secret behind their delicious waffles is the dough made using a Belgian family recipe dating back to the 1950s. The smell of the glazed waffles wafting up your nose is guaranteed to make you want to stop by to grab some.

Their retro-themed decor is cosy, unique and definitely pulls you into a different time.

** These are just for display. Waffles are freshly made in store throughout the day.
Don't these yummies make you drool?

The full product range includes Liege waffles (RM11-19), gelato (RM7/scoop), coffee (RM6-14) and milkshakes (RM16). Ranging from natural gelato, Belgian chocolate fudge, freshly whipped cream, fresh fruits and many more, the toppings offered are wide and of quality. To bring out its rich flavour, their authentic Italian style gelato is made with natural ingredients.

We were really spoilt for choices so we decided to go for two of the three best sellers recommended by the staff. We had the Strawberry Heaven (original Liège waffle with freshly whipped cream, a drizzle of Belgian chocolate fudge and strawberries) and Go Bananas (original Liège waffle with whipped cream, banana slices, a drizzle of Belgian chocolate fudge and mixed nuts) with a scoop of Stracciatella and Panna Cookies gelato respectively. You can choose to have them just as they are or add on gelato like we did at RM7 per scoop. Also you have a choice of the finest Belgium dark, milk or white chocolate to be drizzled over your waffles. They offer both take-away and seating options but we decided to sit and enjoy our waffles over some chit chat.

Strawberry Heaven (RM24)

The waffle was done just how we like it to be; crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. It was also served warm so we knew it was freshly made. The waffle is already sweet by itself and with a scoop of Stracciatella gelato and milk chocolate drizzle you'd think its sweetness would be overwhelming but no, the generous amount of whipped cream balances it out with its almost tasteless with a light milky flavour to it. The slightly sour strawberries also helps. Stracciatella gelato is similar to the American chocolate chip ice cream. The only difference is instead of chunks of chocolate, Stracciatella has fine chocolate shavings throughout which results in a very smooth texture with the slightest crunch in every bite. Also, it has a very rich vanilla flavour and isn't overly sweet. We were very pleased with it and would rate it a 4.5/5

Go Bananas (RM24)

Go Bananas is very similar to Strawberry Heaven except for the choice of fruit topping and gelato flavour. Like the Strawberry Heaven, the whipped cream and bananas balances out the sweetness from the combination of the already sweet waffle and gelato. The Panna Cookies gelato tasted like regular cookies and cream ice cream, which is vanilla based with chunks of cookies (usually oreos) throughout, nothing special. We regretted going for something so familiar instead of venturing gelato flavours we've never had before but nonetheless, we still enjoyed what we had. We would rate Go Bananas a satisfying 4.5/5

Overall, we were very satisfied with their splendid food and swift service. Let's not delude ourselves, waffles are always good but the ones here are exceptional. It is a little punishingly priced but this indulgence is definitely worth the splurge and the calories. We would definitely go back for more the next time we're in KL.

La Marelle Café & Boutique

Located in the heart of Arab Street, La Marelle is a French fantasy themed cafe and boutique by a French design company. La Marelle collaborates with over 40 international artists for their quirky, unique and beautiful inventory featuring bags, iPhone cases, necklaces and stationery. Only two collections or 500 pieces are launched annually and each artwork is pain-stakingly hand-drawn before they are printed onto the products for sale. Their boutique is what sets them apart from other cafes. Its' colourful, quirky and whimsical interior is very intriguing and is bound to put you in a good mood. We were very taken by their beautiful decor particularly the murals on the walls and ceiling. Singapore is the first to have its' very own La Marelle cafe and it is definitely a great addition to the local scene. If you are a fan of things cute and artsy then La Marelle is the place for you.

Iced Cappuccino ($5.50++)
We felt that it tasted quite flat and was a little too diluted for our liking. Also, it's supposedly an iced cappuccino but wasn't served with ice and it turned warm by the time our food arrived. We've had better quality coffee at a similar or even lower price. We would rate this a 2.5/5

Amelie Mocktail ($6.50++)
The base of this mocktail is just regular lemonade but the freshly diced orange and kiwi, and selasih seeds adds an interesting twist to the flavour. It was a little too sour at first but tasted better after awhile especially between mouths of food. It'd be great if they could remove the orange seeds. Apart from that, it was pleasant and thirst quenching and we would rate this a 4/5

Iced Chocolate ($5.50++)
The drink was too concentrated and ice cubes were absent. It was almost warm when served. It really made us question their understanding of iced drinks. We would rate this a 2/5

All croissants are stuffed with scrambled egg and salad, and served with nachos and salsa on the side. There are 4 types to choose from; Mexico, Italian, French and German. What tells them apart is the choice of sausages and sauce.

Italian Stuffed Croissant ($12.90++)
The croissant itself was very fluffy and buttery which was really nice. The Italian chicken sausage and mustard-mayo sauce was flavourful however, comparing it to the size of the croissant, we felt that just one sausage wasn't sufficient. It'd be great if they could serve it with two sausages like the French Stuffed Croissant. The scrambled egg was very bland. They could have seasoned it with a little salt or pepper to add to the flavour. The nachos was accompanied by salsa sauce which tasted somewhat similar to the chilli sauce served with chicken rice and we felt that it didn't quite complement the nachos. We felt that the stuffed croissant was pretty bland as a whole but we would give plus points for presentation. We would rate this a 3/5

French Stuffed Croissant ($12.90++)
This is quite similar to the Italian stuffed croissant except that it was served with chicken saucisse, mushrooms and bechamel sauce. Similar to the Italian, we felt that it was quite bland as a whole and the sauce could be replaced with cheese or something that complemented the nachos better. We would rate this a 3/5

Mushroom Ravioli ($15.90++)
The ravioli was served in mushroom cream sauce and sprinkled with beef bacon slices. The ravioli was well cooked and  had a great texture but the beef bacon slices were unevenly cooked leaving a tad bit slightly raw which was unpleasant. We thought it tasted quite lovely at first bite but it started to get extremely salty. It wasn't the kind of salty that goes as you swallow your food but the kind that lingers in the mouth until after a few gulps of water. We tried masking the taste with the nachos served with the stuffed croissants but to no avail. We gave up eventually. This is definitely neither worth the money nor the calories. Also, they could make a slight improvement presentation wise. We'd rate this a disappointing 1.5/5

We were confused at how and why there is a hype going on about how great the food served at La Marelle is especially after our not very satisfying dinner. Maybe these desserts are responsible for all the hype. We didn't try them but just look at them, don't they make your mouth water? There is a wide range of desserts available from red velvet cakes to oreo cheesecakes and assorted macarons.

Overall, the food was not very pleasing. We might consider going back to try their desserts but definitely not going back for a second round of their main dishes. We were also quite disappointed with the service rendered. Their staff were quite friendly but were not very efficient. Also, there was a slight mix up in our orders. The cafe is well decorated and maintained but we felt that it was a little crammed and noisy. Free wifi and powerpoint plugs are available for those who like to work on-the-go.
